THE MISSION OF THE CAMARILLO
DISASTER ASSISTANCE RESPONSE TEAM IS TO RESPOND IN SUPPORT OF THE CITY OF
CAMARILLO AND THE COUNTY OF VENTURA, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF LOCAL LAW
ENFORCEMENT, IN TIMES OF GENERAL NEED, EMERGENCY, AND DECLARED DISASTER. Table of

In October, 1989, organized and trained
citizens did much to assist the communities that were struck by the Loma Prieta
earthquake. Their efforts were recognized and greatly appreciated by emergency
services professionals and the citizens of the communities they served. The City
of Camarillo recognized the importance of having a citizen's response group
which could be activated to assist emergency service workers in the event of
disaster or large scale emergency. In March, 1990, by City Council resolution,
the Camarillo Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) was formed. Table of

The team and its activities are coordinated
through the Camarillo Police Department. They have as their stated objective,
"to assist the Camarillo Police Department in its emergency and public service
functions". To meet this objective, all DART members have been trained in
medical intervention, traffic control, emergency radio communications, and the
skills necessary for a search and rescue operation. Table of Contents
All DART members have undergone 80 hours of core
training in:
Basic Life Support, First Aid, and CPR
Urban Search and Rescue
Incident Command System (ICS)
Media Relations at the Incident
Traffic and Crowd Control
Fire Suppression
Scene Survey and Damage Assessment
Mass Casualty Management and Triage
Once members have
completed their core training, advanced training is offered each month. Training
exercises are staged regularly to test team members as to their response to a
given scenario. Table of Contents
Members wear distinctive uniforms
with organizational shoulder patches and name patches. Other equipment issued by
the City includes hard-hats with lights, reflective vests, rainwear, and
communication equipment. Supplemental equipment includes pry bars, sledge
hammers, portable halogen lighting, first aid kits, stretchers, generators, and
the mobile command post. Table of Contents
The "ERV" is a converted
BOX Ambulance. This vehicle serves as the command, planing, and communications
center for a given incident or event. The ERV along with a 12 Foot utility trailer contain emergency,
rescue, and first aid equipment. Additional supplies needed at the time of
emergency activation are stored in the support trailer. Table of Contents
DART members assist the Camarillo Police
Department and the City annually at such functions as the Christmas Parade,
Fourth of July fireworks show, Fiesta Days Parade, and the Point Mugu Air Show.
Callouts for DART include the Northridge earthquake and a call to assist
the Ventura County Fire Department at the Green Meadows Fire. The Team also
worked during the heavy rains, the La Conchita Mud slide, has assisted during hazardous materials
accidents, missing persons searches and the Alaska FLT 271 plane crash Table of Contents
The Camarillo DART has members of all ages,
backgrounds, professions, and talents. Members must be at least 18 years of age,
live in the Camarillo area, and be in good health. Most importantly, members
have a strong desire to serve their community. Table of
